Torch On Roofing: 101

Torch-on roofing is a combination of asphalt and resin where sheets of modified bitumen are melted together by a torch. These materials are rolled on and permanently welded together with other layers beneath. This creates a waterproof barrier and a roof that is resistant to the damaging effects of ultraviolet light, debris, pests and rot. Torch-on roofs can last for up to 20 years and are virtually maintenance-free. Because this type of roof is very dangerous to install and requires extensive knowledge of techniques and fire safety, it’s important to choose a company you trust.

Types of Torch On Roofing

Torch On roofing is available in a two-layer or three-layer system.

  1. In a two-layer torch-on roofing system, the base ply is usually smooth, while the granular surface ply is usually smooth.
  2. A three-layer torch On roofing system consists of a board of asphaltic material, a base ply with a smooth surface, and a top ply with a granular surface. Three-ply roofs last longer and are better than two-ply roofs.

Additional Installation

It can be beneficial for you to install a torch-on roof membrane to your foundation as well as to your decks or patios in addition to your roof. As a result of the material’s durability, it is possible to install decking over your finished product without worrying about problems with the finish.
